Abstract

1. 1. The exoskeleton of the ectoproct Flustra foliacea consists of about 14 per cent scleroprotein, 1 per cent chitin and 85 per cent calcium carbonate and phosphate. 2. 2. The scleroprotein contains 30 per cent glycine and 25 per cent dicarboxylic amino acids. 3. 3. Microscopic examination of exoskeleta stained for chitin as chitosan reveals its presence in the zoecial walls. Chitin fuses the individuals of the colony together longitudinally and the scleroprotein fuses them laterally. 4. 4. The composition of the scleroprotein is not like that of proteins from other mineralized, invertebrate, skeleta.
