Abstract
Abstract A survey of snails from Lake Wanaka was undertaken in 1976–77 to determine the presence of trematode larval stages. This showed that Lymnaea tomentosa was the only host for Cercaria longicauda, the causal organisms of schistosome dermatitis. Potamopyrgus antipodarum was the host for cotylomicrocercous, monostome, haplosplanchnid, and brevifurcateapharyngeate cercariae of trematodes. All specimens of Physa spp. and Gyraulus spp. examined were uninfected. The prevalence of all parasites was 2.22% in P. antipodarum and 5.8% in L. tomentosa. Lymnaea tomentosa harboured megalurous and echinostome cercariae as well as Cercaria longicauda.
