Abstract

Erich Mendelsohn is arguably one of the most eminent architects of the 20th century. The Schaubuhne building is not only remarkable as a type of theatre venue, but regarding its way of dealing with landmark-protected building substance. In the course of the restoration – maybe re-construction would be the better term – this issue stirred up a lot of controversy throughout the project phase from 1976 to 1981. The theatre was founded in 1962 under the name of “Schaubuhne am Halleschen Ufer” as a private theatre with a politically and socially conscious repertoire. In 1968, a group of young theatre makers and actors came to the Schaubühne with Peter Stein. The Schaubuhne’s concept is that of a laboratory that works in dialogue with other disciplines such as architecture, visual arts, music, literature and film to develop a new theatrical language. The company looked at many buildings that offered the potential to be converted to suit the work of the Schaubuhne.
