Faro1 and Miguel Alfonso1 1 Vigo University, Department of Functional Biology and Health Sciences, Spain The health-related environmental relevance of freshwater and marine phytoplankton is principle related to their ability to produce a wide range of toxins. These toxins are dangerous to different life form including man. Saxitoxin (STX) is one of several related toxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). These toxins are produced by different genus of dinoflagellates (e.g. Alexandrium catenella, Alexandrium tamarense, Karenia brevis). They are powerful neurotoxic compounds which blocks the sodium channels voltage sensitive, entailing to the appearance of the main symptoms of the poisoning by PSP: Muscular paralysis and respiratory depression. Due to the wide geographical distribution of dinoflagellates and its implications in harmful algae bloom, an assessment of the potential risk to human health is needed. The aim of this study was to know the effect that the systemic administration of 5 and 10 μg/Kg STX doses (body weight) produce on the levels of neurotransmitters (biogenic amines) in different male rat brain regions. After three time intervals, 30, 60 and 120 min for the first dose and 30 min for the second one, animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation. The results obtained showed that STX produced alterations in the levels of neurotransmitters.
