Abstract

An electronic nose (E-nose) comprising of a polymer (SXFA) coated SAW sensor and a reference SAW device is proposed for the detection of DMMP, diesel, benzene and methanol vapors using temperature variation. The single SAW sensor can be made equivalent to an E-nose by operating it at different temperatures. The complicated RF electronics as well as the crosstalks between oscillators can be minimized using this technique. The SAW device is placed in Colpitts oscillator configuration and is kept in an Environmental Chamber whose temperature can be controlled in the range −20°C to +70°C. The SAW sensor showed different response patterns with exposure to DMMP, diesel, benzene and methanol vapors at different temperature. The feature extraction from the normalized response of the SAW sensor has been performed successfully by principal component analysis.
