Abstract

ON AUG. 5, 1945, the world was made dramatically aware of the successful conclusion of the greatest scientific research effort in history—the splitting of the atom. On Oct. 4, 1957, the world again was startled to learn of another tremendous breakthrough in science. That day will be remembered as long as the world exists as the day Russia successfully launched a satellite and confirmed the claim made by Moscow six weeks ago of the first conclusive test of an intercontinental ballistic missile. Russia has won both a scientific and a propaganda victory. Its effects on a stunned world are profound but only partially understood. While they are debated, the Russian satellite continues to circle the earth at 18,000 miles an hour. It is giving off signals that are being broadcast to millions who wonder what this world will be like now that we are on the verge of possibly reaching other planets. ...
