Abstract

Ion absorption by Chara corallina from solutions containing predominantly KCl or RbCl at up to 100 mol m -3 accumulation of salts and turgor regulation. Turgor repulation did not occur in solutions containing Na + or Li + salts. During ion absorption from various salts of K + and Rb + vacuolar cation concentration exceeded Cl - concentration. This difference was shown to be balanced by the synthesis and accumulation of malate. Vacuolar malate concentration reached 48 mol m -3 , with accumulation occurring at rates of up to 045 mol m -3 h -1
