Abstract

This chapter explores how performers moved into and out of established and evolving television genres and how changes within the television industry opened up spaces welcoming to at times racy performers from the desert. Television allowed Vegas to become displaced from its geographical space and erotics and transform into a valued ethos of energy, sparkle, and sex-lite, just right for a developing television industry and a shifting American culture. This give-and-take of television’s cultural ubiquity and Vegas flesh and flash created an unexpected symbiosis between the entertainment meccas. Television lineups and regulation, variety-show guests, TV-Vegas club pairings, and Desert City entertainment reviews help to shed light on this unexpected marriage of conservatism and salacious excess that brought a whole new meaning to the term “boob tube.”
