Abstract

Rzewski and Nono both worked directly with The Living Theatre, yet each embraced different aspects of the group. Rzewski favored the collective and communal approach to art as practiced by Malina and Beck. Nono preserved the technologically innovative spirit of Piscator. The differences in their approaches may be seen in compositions based on shared source material: Peter Weiss's Die Ermittlung, and the Greek myths of Antigone and Prometheus. Despite sharing compatible political aims, Rzewski exercised a communal approach to historical musical styles that Nono found artistically objectionable.
