Abstract

Abstract Experimental data on systems with charge (Sm 3 Se 4 , Fe 3 O 4 , Yb 4 As 3 ) and spin (Y 1− x Sc x Mn 2 ) degrees of freedom are analysed, which indicate the formation of a quantum (pseudo) spin liquid state (suppression of long-range order, occurence of an anomalous linear term in the specific heat). A model yielding an anisotropic pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian is proposed for systems with charge degrees of freedom. The problem of the coexistence of an RVB-type state and “antiferromagnetic” ordering is discussed.
