Abstract
Twenty suitably qualified cosmonaut candidates had been selected, and with training set to commence in March 1960 the rapid completion of a specialized but covert accommodation and training centre now became a priority. The site eventually selected was a former military installation in the middle of a dense birch forest in the Shchelkovo area, some 25 miles northeast of Moscow. Eight years later, in 1968, the facility would be given the official and appropriate name Zvezdny Gorodok, correctly translating to Starry Town, but more popularly known as Star City. In the meantime it would be known simply as the Cosmonaut Training Centre, or TsPK.
