Abstract
Rural South Africa has undergone a post-productivist shift and more regional policy attention has focused on cultural and creative industry (CCI) clusters as a local economic development (LED) strategy. However, for culture-led development to be successful, existing CCIs need to be understood and carefully mapped. With a focus on the Sarah Baartman District in a rural part of South Africa, this chapter demonstrates how geographic information system (GIS) mapping techniques can be used to identify CCI clusters. Results showed the widespread prominence of cultural heritage assets and visual arts and crafts, with nodes of comparative advantage for performance and celebration and design and creative services.
