The former eastern edge of Bratislava – the area neighbouring St Andrew’s Cemetery – fi rst underwent signifi cant urbanization through modern urban regulation in the 1930s, this it had been preceded by attempts based on plans by Victor Bernárdt in 1905 and by the Technical Division in 1906. The 1930s regulation included the creation of transverse and longitudinal urban axes – Cintorínska Street (ulica) and Lazaretská Street – with modern multifunctional residential buildings that off ered administrative and commercial services. At the intersection of the two axes, the building of Slovenská Grafi a – the original Slovak printing house – was built according to a design of the builder Rudolf Frič. Together with Frič’s other buildings, today these buildings represent the most comprehensive segment of interwar redevelopment in this area, as the entire interwar redevelopment of both the axes has never been completed. At the same time, they serve as confi rmation of a contemporary practice in which regulatory plans were intentionally tailored to fi t the interests of developers and project architects who were directly represented in the city’s regulatory bodies. In this study case, they were tailored to the interests of Rudolf Frič, who intervened in an intentional change of the regulation of both Cintorínska and Lazaretská.

Urinary stone size: comparison of abdominal plain radiography and noncontrast CT measurements.

 • J Kellogg Parsons + 5 more

To compare urinary stone size as measured by abdominal plain radiography (AXR) with stone size as measured by noncontrast three-dimensional spiral CT in patients with acute renal colic. Patients presenting to the emergency room of a single institution with urinary stones that were visible on both AXR and noncontrast spiral CT were identified. Two radiologists blinded to the clinical outcomes separately and randomly reviewed all films and measured maximum longitudinal (craniocaudal) and transverse (anteroposterior) stone diameters. The two-tailed paired Student's t-test was used to compare the sizes of each stone on AXR and CT. Over a 1-year period, 22 patients were identified with a total of 31 urinary stones visible on both AXR and CT. Nineteen stones were located in the kidney, three in the midureter, and nine in the distal ureter. The mean stone size by AXR was 6.1 mm (range 2-13 mm; SD +/- 1.95) in the longitudinal axis and 5.3 mm (range 2-11 mm; SD +/- 1.50) in the transverse axis. The mean stone size by CT was 6.9 mm (range 3-12 mm; SD +/- 1.95) in the longitudinal axis and 6.1 mm (range 2-11 mm; SD +/- 1.50) in the transverse. The differences between AXR and CT measurements did not attain significance in either the longitudinal (p = 0.67) or the transverse (p = 0.25) axis. A CT scan provides estimates of stone size that are consistently greater than those of AXR in both the longitudinal and transverse axes. However, for stones between 2 and 13 mm in maximum diameter, these differences do not attain significance. In patients with a history of radiopaque stones in this size range, therefore, AXR may provide useful size data for clinical decision-making without concern about significant disparities between the two modalities. As AXRs are more expeditiously obtained, incur less direct costs, and expose patients to significantly lower doses of radiation than CT scans, they remain a useful adjunctive study in the work-up of nephrolithiasis.

Regional Plan against Coastal Erosion: A Conceptual Model for Sicily
 • Sep 1, 2020
 • Land
 • Giovanni Randazzo + 1 more

Over the last few decades, Sicily has faced both erosion-related difficulties and limited Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). In particular, a lack of synergy between regional bodies, an absence of information exchange between scientific and administrative communities, the application of not-updated national and international best practices and the misrepresentation of environmental laws, have resulted in a system focused on risk erosion rather than on coastal area development. Following years without planning, in 2006 the Regione Siciliana launched PAI-coste (Hydro-Geological Asset Plan. It is interesting to note that in Italy, the “risk” known worldwide as geological or hydraulic or geomorphological is commonly denoted as “hydro-geological”, creating a pseudo-neologism correctly related to the groundwater circulation and not to surficial movements.), based on a diachronic comparison between cartographies and territorial qualitative information. However, it has proved to be static and obsolete and thus requires updating in order to determine the focal points for further planning and to shift it from an e-static to e-dynamic process via the GIS and WEBGIS tools. Sicilian legislation holds all the laws necessary for the creation of a continuous flow of information between local administrations and the regional government. The aim of this paper is to determine a regional management plan for the central government against coastal erosion with the inclusion of a seasonal monitoring program carried out by the local administration as a part of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), which is in turn linked to the Plan for the Administrations of Maritime State Property (PUDM; Italian acronym). The plan will be managed at the regional level and will take into account problems and particular features at a higher rather than local level. A key outcome should be the Regional Plan against Coastal Erosion, containing constant feedback from the local administration, stakeholders and citizen groups.

The effect of the innominate osteotomy according to Salter was investigated by a roentgen stereophotogrammetric method in a 17-year-old girl with hip dysplasia as a part of the tricho-rhino-phalangeal (Giedion) syndrome. The osteotomy resulted in a total rotation of 32 degrees about an axis passing cranially to the pubic symphysis and the osteotomy. The acetabulum rotated 22 degrees forwards about a transverse axis, 9 degrees laterally about a longitudinal axis and 24 degrees laterally about a sagittal axis. The acetabulum was translated 2 mm laterally along a transverse axis, 21 mm caudally along a longitudinal axis and 19 mm dorsally along a sagittal axis. The position of the screw axis indicates that some motion also took place in one or both of the sacroiliac joints. The correction as measured with the CE-angle was 25 degrees which was almost the same as the correction about the sagittal axis. It is, however, noted that the CE-angle was also dependent upon the rotations about the transverse and longitudinal axes.

The current constructional project have significant influence on the traffic system in the evaluation scope by TIA, the modification of the regulatory detailed plan and the plan conditions proposed is impossible for its characteristic of ex-post evaluation. Thus the effectiveness of TIA is greatly reduced. This paper discusses this issue and puts part of the content of TIA upward into regulatory plan stage. The focus and content of each stage can be clearly assigned by the integration of comprehensive transportation system plan in master plan, TIA in regulatory plan, TIA in constructional detail plan and project design. Furthermore, the paper introduces the measure which was put forward in urban comprehensive transportation plan of Bayuquan District in Yingkou City and TIA was applied in regulatory plan of Wanghai new District. By improving the method and testing the effects, the role of TIA can be further enhanced.

Investigating the normal dimensions and sizes of human eye orbit by MRI in Labafinejad Hospital patients in 2016 in Tehran
 • Dec 23, 2019
 • Fakhroddin Aghajanpour + 5 more

Background: Anthropometry is one of the principal researches in. The eye orbit is involved in most cranial abnormalities. Concerning the lack of adequate information in Iranian populations and the effect of factors including gender, age, and geographical region, the aim of this study was to investigate the normal dimensions and sizes of human eye orbit through MRI.Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive, analytical, and prospective study which was performed on 120 patients referring to the MRI center of Labafinejad and Torfeh hospitals. In fact, 20 patients were excluded due to eye-associated disorders. The longitudinal and transversal axes, as well as the eye orbit volume were measured, and the age, gender, and the sidedness of eye were reported and evaluated. Results: The mean age was 38, and the eye orbit volume, longitudinal axis, and transversal axes were measured as 5593 mm3, 22 mm, and 21.9 mm, respectively. The minimum average measured value was related to the distance between the posterior edge of the frontal processes of the upper jaw bones (21 mm in females and 23 mm in males), while the maximum average was measured across the posterior poles of the two eye orbits (26 mm in females and 29 mm in males) (P<0.4).Conclusion: The data suggestd that the longitudinal and transversal axes, as well as the volume of right and left eyes are larger in men than in women. The difference in the eye orbit volume of men, as compared to women can be attributed to a large body mass in men.

Computational Study on the Effect of Thienyl π-Donor on the Optical Response of Nonclassical Oligo-Pyrazinothienothiadiazole Biradicaloids.

Computational analyses were performed on nitrogen-rich oligothiadizolothiophenes TTn (n = 0-3) and their four π-donor-substituted derivatives Th-TTn (n = 0-3) to examine the optical response due to geometrical and electronic structural attributes in the longitudinal and transverse axes, respectively. Our results are understood in the context of greater conjugation in the longitudinal axis (via additional fused rings) and substitution of a thienyl π-donor in the transverse axis of the geometry of each derivative. On inspection of the frontier molecular orbitals, we found that the better electron-accepting ability with minimal sacrifice in the ionization potentials results from geometrical aspects in both longitudinal and transverse axes. Due to the narrowed highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gaps, all of the derivatives exhibit a biradicaloid character (BRC) and one-photon panchromatic absorption; however, the open-shell nature weakened the charge transfer characteristics of excitation. In both the series, the odd electron density distributions and electron localization plots amply demonstrate the weakening of ylide character in fused thiophene rings and clearly indicate to the emergence of a long-bond/single BRC in the sulfurdimithide moiety in both series. In addition, the estimated tensor components of the second hyperpolarizability as well as overall responses confirm the shift from the longitudinal to transverse axis following the substitution with the π-donor. Interestingly, the TPA cross sections show comparable behavior, but contrary to γ, π-donor thienyl substitution appears to be discouraging in getting higher TPA responses for higher homologous series. Therefore, this study opens a new conjecture on tuning better nonlinear optical properties of organic functional materials.

Determination of the tissue attenuation factor along two major axes of a high dose rate (HDR) 192Ir source.

 • Sang Hyun Cho + 2 more

Quantitative information on photon scattering around brachytherapy sources is needed to develop dose calculation formalisms capable of predicting dosimetric parameters with minimal empiricism. Photon absorption and scatter around brachytherapy sources can be characterized using the tissue attenuation factor, defined as the ratio of dose in water to water kerma in free space. In this study, the tissue attenuation factor along two major axes of a high dose rate (HDR) 192Ir source was determined by TLD measurements and MCNP Monte Carlo calculations. A calculational method is also suggested to derive the tissue attenuation factor along the longitudinal source axis from the factor along the transverse axis, using published anisotropy data as input. TLD and Monte Carlo results agreed with each other for both source axes within the statistical uncertainty (approximately +/- 5%) of Monte Carlo calculations. Comparison with published data, available only for the transverse source axis, also showed good agreement within +/- 5%. The shape and magnitude of the tissue attenuation factor are found to be remarkably different between the two axes. The tissue attenuation factor reaches a maximum value of about 1.4 at 8 cm from the source along the longitudinal source axis, while a maximum value of about 1.04 occurs at 3-4 cm from the source along the transverse axis. The calculated tissue attenuation factor along the longitudinal source axis generally reproduced the TLD and Monte Carlo results within +/- 5% at most radial distances.

In this study, we identify methods of measuring accessibility to public services in the city of Aqaba. Accessibility is an indicator of the efficiency of their spatial distribution in relation to residential neighborhoods in the city. Administrative, commercial, educational, health and entertainment services were selected for a case study because they are the most important services. We used spatial analysis tools in Arc Map within the geographic information systems (GIS) environment to measure direct distances between neighborhood centres and public services and to determine the number of services within specific ranges (1,000 m, 500 m, 200 m), using the three most common methods of measuring accessibility: the distance to the nearest service, the number of services within a certain distance or time, and the average distance for all services. The results of this research indicate that educational services have the highest degree of accessibility, followed by slight differences among recreational, administrative, and commercial services. Health services lag further behind.

DYNAMIC MODELLING FOR THE SECOND FLIGHT PHASE OF THE YURCHENKO LAYOUT VAULT BASED ON MSC. ADAMS
 • Jun 1, 2020
 • Science of Gymnastics Journal
 • Kum-Hyok Hwang + 3 more

Gymnasts attempt to increase the angles of rotation about transversal and longitudinal axes during the post-flight of vaulting, and these angles are related to different mechanical properties. The present study uses a 3D angle-driven computer simulation model of a gymnast who performs Yurchenko layout vault using ADAMS software. Simulation initial conditions are horizontal and vertical velocities of gymnast’s pelvis center and angular velocities about the transversal and longitudinal axes which can be easily measured. The initial linear and angular velocity conditions of the simulation model are each changed in certain increments from measurement data collected from an elite woman gymnast. Increasing initial horizontal velocity results in an increased horizontal flight distance, but has no connection with the duration of flight and angle of twists. The overall angle of twists is concerned with initial vertical velocity and angular velocities about the transversal and longitudinal axes. Also, increasing initial vertical velocity and angular velocity about transverse axis leads to increase in touchdown angle between ground’s horizontal axis and gymnast’s longitudinal axis.

Diagnostic value of elastosonographically determined strain index in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid nodules
 • Nov 15, 2010
 • Endocrine
 • Bekir Cakir + 11 more

Elastosonography (ES) is a newly developed method that is used for the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid nodules. In different studies, ES scoring has been compared with histopathological findings, and sensitivity and specificity of the scoring were calculated. In this study, it determines the strain index (SI) as well as the ES to score thyroid nodules, and establishes the role for these parameters in the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules using histopathological analysis as a reference standard. Real-time ES in transverse axis (TA) and longitudinal axis (LA) was performed in 391 nodules of 292 patients. ES scoring was made for all the nodules. SI in TA and LA was calculated for four times in each nodule and mean values were determined. The results were compared with final histopathological diagnoses. In histopathological examinations, 125 (31.97%) of 391 nodules were malignant and 266 (68.03%) were benign. Of these histopathologically benign nodules, 189 (%71.05) were also probably benign according to elastosonographic scoring (scores of 1, 2, or 3), while 77 (28.95%) were probably malignant (scores of 4 or 5). Among 125 histopathologically malignant nodules, 52 (41.60%) were probably benign and 73 (58.40%) were probably malignant according to elastosonographic scoring. There was a significant relation between scoring and histopathological findings (χ(2)=36.513; P<0.001). Accordingly, sensitivity and specificity of ES scoring were 58.4 and 71.0%, respectively. ROC analysis value obtained for strain ratios in LA (AUC: 75.5%; P<0.001) had a higher significance compared to ROC analysis value obtained for strain ratios in TA (AUC: 66.0%). Thus, ROC analysis evaluation was applied only for SI in LA. The optimal SI cut-off value in LA for all the nodules was found to be 16.709 (sensitivity: 73.4%, specificity: 70.0%) (AUC: 75.4±0.03%; 70.2-80.5%). SI cut-off value corresponding to 90% sensitivity in this axis was 4.516 (specificity: 35.7%). Sensitivity and specificity of SI values that were determined according to morphological features of nodules in gray-scale ultrasonography were higher. For hypoechoic nodules with microcalcifications and without a halo, SI cut-off value, sensitivity, and specificity were 17.020, 84.3, and 81.1%, respectively. Our study is the first clinical-wide series study that measured, used, and compared the ES scoring and SI cut-off values for the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid nodules. This study indicates that measurement of SI with ES as a noninvasive procedure may be used as an adjunctive method to the conventional methods for the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules.

Ultrasound Imaging of Thoracolumbar Fascia Thickness: Chronic Non-Specific Lower Back Pain versus Healthy Subjects; A Sign of a “Frozen Back”?
 • Apr 16, 2023
 • Diagnostics
 • Carmelo Pirri + 6 more

The thoracolumbar fascia (TLF) plays an important role in lower back pain (LBP). Recent studies have revealed an association between increases in TLF thickness and reduced TLF gliding in patients with LBP. The purpose of this study was to measure and compare by ultrasound (US) imaging the thickness of the TLF at the bilateral L3 level of the lumbar spine in the longitudinal and transverse axes in chronic non-specific LBP and in healthy subjects. A cross-sectional study was performed using US imaging to measure the longitudinal and transverse axes with a new protocol in a sample of 92 subjects: 46 chronic non-specific LBP patients and 46 healthy participants. The findings for TLF thickness revealed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in the longitudinal and transverse axes between the two groups. Moreover, in the healthy group, a statistically significant difference was found between the longitudinal and transverse axes (p = 0.001 for left and p = 0.02 for right), which was not evident in the LBP patients. These findings suggest that the LBP patients lost anisotropy of the TLF, with it becoming homogeneously thicker and losing adaptability in the transversal direction. The US imaging evaluation suggests that TLF thickness behavior points out altered fascial remodelling compared to healthy subjects, a sort of “frozen back”.
