Abstract

Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for both the leading cause of death (heart disease) and the leading cause of cancer death (lung cancer) in North America. Many patients with ischemic heart disease smoke cigarettes and are at increased risk of lung cancer. Therefore, heart transplant patients are at increased risk of lung cancer when compared to age-matched controls. Chest CT should diagnose lung cancer in these patients at a stage more amenable for surgical resection. We performed a retrospective analysis of all 314 patients who underwent cardiac transplantation at our institution between 1988 and 2004.
