Abstract
A laboratory for routine alpha-spectrometry based on gridded ionisation chambers (80, 500 and 20,000 cm 2 of source area, respectively) has been built for direct measurement of low specific activity samples. They allow direct spectrometry of samples having specific activities as low as 6.7, 2.5 and 0.18 mBq g −1, respectively. Simple quantitative physical methods of large-area source preparation are described. The system has been used to measure the concentration of alpha-emitters in environmental samples.
