Abstract

Photometrics Ltd has released Aurora, a CCD imaging system that is designed for professional astronomers. The Aurora provides the large field of view necessary for accurate and efficient astronomical measurement, and is useful for exacting lowlight measurements. The imaging system incorporates Photometrics' Series 200 camera controller together with a back-illuminated, AR-coated, Thomson 2048 by 2048 pixel CCD. The Aurora's typical electronic read noise of 5 electrons RMS allows detection of very faint light sources. By combining deep cooling of the CCD and MPP clocking, dark current is virtually eliminated. With the use of a large-capacity 2 litre dewar, the temperature hold time can exceed 18 hours.
