Assessment of Sustainable Economic Development in the EU Countries with Reference to the SDGs and Environmental Footprint Indices
  • Sep 8, 2022
  • Sustainability
  • Kęstutis Biekša + 3 more

The article analyses sustainable economic development of EU countries according to the sustainable development goals (SDGs), by using indices of integrated sustainable development and environmental footprint. Sustainable economic initiatives can be driven by economic, environmental and social aspects, applying principles of innovation and knowledge. However, development requires skills, human and financial resources; in turn, it increases productivity, efficiency, competitiveness, profit, and promotes a better working environment. In general, sustainable business initiatives contribute to SDGs and reduce the environmental footprint. The scientific problem is how to develop a sustainable economy while ensuring the achievement of SDGs and at the same time reducing the environmental footprint. The object of the scientific research is the evaluation of sustainable economic development through the analysis of integrated sustainable development indicators. The aim of the research is, upon the evaluation of SDGs and environmental footprint indices as well as the analysis of the integrated sustainable development indicator, to identify the opportunities for sustainable economic development in the EU countries. The research has been carried out by analysing the scientific literature, and applying SDGs and environmental footprint methodology to calculate individual and integrated sustainable development indices. The results have shown that despite the disparity of SDG indices, the overall value of the integrated sustainable development indicator is distributed quite evenly among the EU countries. The impacts from each of the SDG indices range from 11% to 31% but the environmental footprint index has the greatest impact on the sustainable development of a country—up to 31%.

DETERMINATION OF THE INFLUENCE NATURE OF INSTITUTIONS ON ACHIEVEMENT OF GOALS FOR SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN AGRICULTURAL COMPLEX
  • Dec 2, 2020
  • Ukrainian Journal of Applied Economics
  • Kateryna Kozak

Introduction. The current state of the external environment, which is determined by the challenges of sustainable economic development, has become an objective basis for the statement: ensuring the successful operation of enterprises (increasing competitiveness and strengthening their potential) is not possible without external factors and rapid response to change, adaptive management mechanisms that can ensure the transition of agro-industrial enterprises to the trajectory of sustainable economic development. Changes in the philosophy of management require appropriate changes in the system of institutions. The institutional logic of development presupposes the existence of continuous institutional formation in systems where innovations take place. Innovations as an element of the essential characteristics of sustainable economic development determine, normatively include the need for changes in the institutional system. The purpose of the article is to determine on the basis of modeling tools the nature of the impact of institutions on achieving the goals of sustainable economic development of the agro-industrial complex. Results. The elements of the institutional basis for the implementation of the sustainable economic development paradigm in the agro-industrial sector of Ukraine are identified, with the allocation of blocks and groups of institutions. Based on the use of cognitive and scenario modeling tools, the priority of institutional blocks of the general matrix of institutions to ensure the achievement of the main goals of sustainable economic development in the agro-industrial complex is determined. It is established that the greatest positive impact of all considered and analyzed institutions have on the goal of sustainable economic development of agro-industrial production, as good health and well-being. The lowest indicators relate to the achievement of high parameters of responsible consumption and production, which necessitates adjustments to the institutional matrix in terms of priority institutions aimed at achieving this goal. Key words: institutes, sustainable development, goals of sustainable development, modeling, development of agro-industrial complex.

The case for urban agriculture: Opportunities for sustainable development
  • Aug 1, 2025
  • Urban Forestry & Urban Greening
  • Hannah Joy Thwaites + 2 more

This review examines the potential role of urban agriculture – the practice of farming within and around cities and densely populated areas – in addressing the pressing challenge of sustainable development, correlated to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a set of 17 interconnected goals designed to guide action towards a sustainable and equitable future, the SDGs represent a call to action for all countries and highlight the most pressing challenges and opportunities of today. In recognising that the function and impacts of sustainably and equitably feeding the world’s population are inherent to many of the goals, an interrogation of literature about food supply from within the urban environment (where most people live) has been conducted to support the research aim of considering urban agriculture as a strategy to help achieve urban sustainability and resilience goals. Through a narrative review approach this novel investigation extends beyond the constraints of narrow SDG-centric literature to sustainable development more broadly, finding that urban agriculture is highly valued for its ability to strengthen local food systems and its ecosystem service contributions to urban sustainability, along with socio-cultural attributes. This review depicts practices, highlights multifarious benefits, and features potential perverse outcomes and considerations; in the process identifying that the strongest and deepest connections between urban agriculture and sustainable development are with three specific goals: SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Accordingly, the insights gleaned from this narrative review have been structured to reflect the connections with these three SDGs and related to the human- and systems-centric themes of People and Planet . Overall, sensitively applied urban agriculture can strengthen food security, reduce the overall impact of cities, and contribute to the circularity of production and consumption systems, helping to achieve global sustainable development aims. • Urban agriculture is a highly accessible farming system that can contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) • The potential role of urban agriculture is explored from the critical perspectives of People and Planet . • Urban agriculture helps achieve sustainable development aims by addressing multifaceted needs in an integrated manner. • Sensitively applied it can reduce the environmental impact of cities whilst strengthening food security and resilience. • Recognised benefits and potential perverse outcomes need to be carefully balanced.

Spatiotemporal evolution in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau in 2000–2020
  • Mar 1, 2024
  • Transactions in Earth, Environment, and Sustainability
  • Erfu Dai + 4 more

Assessing the sustainable development level of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) is of great significance for China’s sustainable development. With rich natural resources, a fragile ecological environment, and a relatively low level of economic development, the QTP is typical of regions in China where conflict between socio-economic development and environmental protection is prominent. However, there is a lack of assessment of spatiotemporal progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the QTP. To address this gap in knowledge, cluster analysis was used to quantitatively assess spatiotemporal changes in SDG indicators and sustainable development levels in different counties of the QTP from 2000 to 2020. The results show that the sustainable development level of the QTP is increasing; the growth rate of the sustainable development in 2010–2020 was three times that of 2000–2010. The level of sustainable development in the eastern region is significantly higher than that in the western region. However, while the level of sustainable environmental development is high, the levels of sustainable social and economic development remain low. Certain factors, including precipitation, slope, population density, and cultivated area, are strongly positively correlated with the sustainable development of the QTP. The findings of our study can serve as a valuable reference for other jurisdictions seeking to evaluate their evolution towards the SDGs.

Language-based approach in achieving Sustainable Development Goals: A qualitative meta-analysis
  • Apr 30, 2022
  • Bedan Research Journal
  • Ester Rada

Scholars of language believe that where there is no language there is no development, thus language is pivotal in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study aims to explore a language-based approach to the achievement of SDGs. Studies and reports describe language theories such as Edward Sapir-Benjamin Lee Whorf Linguistic Determinism Theory, Geoffery Leech’s five characteristics of language, Lev Vygotsky Developmental Theory, Jim Cummins Principles of Language – Basic Interpersonal Skills/Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency and other relevant linguistic concepts vis-à-vis sustainability goals and enumerate how the SDGs can be translated into a plan of action through the language-based approach. Specifically, the study focuses on Goal 3- Good health and wellbeing, Goal 4 - Quality education, Goal 16 - Peace, justice, and strong institutions, and Goal 17 - Partnership for the goal. Qualitative meta-analysis was employed using a five-step synthesis approach: 1) Exploring the field and defining research questions 2) search, selection, and appraisal of studies (sampling procedure) 3) data extraction 4) aggregation and 5) synthesis to analyze data from reports, symposiums, and studies as the main sources of data. In the iterative analyses, aggregates of concepts were identified: 1) language 2) language users 3) inclusiveness, equality, and sustainability 4) Sustainable Development Goals and language-based approaches. Other concepts were extracted from data such as diversity of language, language and culture, multilingualism, plurilingualism, multiculturalism, multilingualism, mother tongue-based multilingual education, literacy and reading skills, communication disabilities, minority vs. dominant languages, language loss and language maintenance, rights language to health care, inclusivity, vulnerability, diversity, equality, global citizenship, transparency and integrity, nationalism, national unity and collective identity and their centrality in the development, implementation, and successful completion of the SDGs.ReferencesBaart, J. • Mordecai Oweibia + 9 more

Rationale This study critically examines Nigeria’s journey towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since their inception. Nigeria, a United Nations member state and a major oil producer, faces challenges like socio-economic disparities, political instability, corruption, and prevalent poverty, despite its cultural richness and natural resources. Objectives The primary aim is to evaluate Nigeria’s alignment with the SDGs within its national development frameworks, highlighting the significance of these goals in addressing the country’s multifaceted developmental challenges. These challenges span various sectors including poverty, health, education, and environmental sustainability. Methods The study conducts a detailed analysis of Nigeria’s background, including its cultural diversity and developmental hurdles. It reviews national policies and initiatives, notably the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), and the role of the Ministry of Budget and National Planning in coordinating SDG efforts. Results Findings suggest partial progress in SDG integration within Nigeria’s development plans. While some strides have been made in areas like policy alignment and strategic planning, challenges persist in effective implementation and tackling systemic issues like inequality and corruption. Conclusion The analysis reveals that, while Nigeria has made efforts to incorporate the SDGs into national policies, significant gaps remain in addressing key challenges. The complexity of Nigeria’s socio-economic and political landscape presents both hurdles and opportunities for sustainable development. Recommendations The study advocates for more robust policy implementation, enhanced stakeholder engagement, and targeted strategies to overcome specific challenges. By addressing these areas, Nigeria can accelerate its progress towards the SDGs, paving the way for comprehensive and sustainable national development.

  • Н.Ю Бородавкина + 1 more

Modern state policy predetermines necessity of pursuing sustainable development of the regions. Lately, this trend is shown in the creation and development of production infrastructure to ensure the best results of sustainable development indicators. The formation of industrial parks as drivers of economic growth contributes to the creation of an integral production system within the region, aimed at both the formation of economic security of the region and the acceleration of its development. In order to assess the role of industrial parks in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) at the regional level, the article correlates the objectives of SDGs and the contribution of industrial parks to their achievement. Based on the review of the theoretical provisions of the sustainable development of the region and indicators for its assessment, the authors propose a system of indicators for assessing the sustainable development of the region with the allocation of economic, social and environmental aspects. The assessment of indicators for the development of industrial parks institution in the Russian Federation allows us to determine the trends of economic growth in the region with an increase of investment in industrial parks The results of the contribution of industrial parks to the development of the regional economy are correlated with their impact on the achievement of sustainable development goals. An important result of the presented study is the formation of conclusions based on the analysis of the positions of Russian regions — leaders in the number of industrial parks in accordance with the indicators of sustainable development. Among the indicators of ecological, economic and social components of sustainable regional development, the authors examine the ecological rating of regions, the volume of gross regional product per capita and the human development index calculated on the basis of official statistics.
