Abstract
The present paper defines a floating breakwater; its principal characteristics, a wide historical review, and an analytical development of structures, from the point of view of their efficiency in the coastal engineering, are provided. An emphasis is made in the possibility to apply those structures in coastal protection problems, among other uses, like for the generation of alleviated areas for naval operations and disembark on nautical wharfs.
