Abstract

The structure of supercoiled DNA has recently been ascertained using experimental and computational methods. Negative supercoiling restricts the ensemble of DNA conformations and facilitates the opening of the DNA double helix. These attributes of supercoiling are exploited in multiple ways during DNA transactions such as site-specific recombination, transportation transcription, and the initiation of DNA synthesis.
