Abstract
Objective: 1. To study the relationship between vitamin D levels and gastric motility in patients with gastroparesis ( GP) from inflammatory enteric neuropathy ( IEN)2. Prevalance of low vitamin D levels in patients with GP from IEN Background IEN is a cause of GP and is characterized by presence of inflammatory cells in the myenteric plexus. Gastrointestinal dysmotility occurs from loss of innervation and additional factors such as deficiency in micronutrients play a role. Vitamin D is important for maintaining normal muscle tone and strength in skeletal muscles. Design/Methods: Fifty nine consecutive patients with idiopathic gastroparesis from IEN were studied. Symptom scores, gastric emptying time, vitamin levels including vitamin D were measured. Vitamin D levels were correlated with gastric emptying time. Results: Eleven of the 59 patients had diabetes mellitus( DM). 1925 dihydroxy vitamin D3 levels were low in all (38.68±25.05 ng/ml), lower in DM (30.02±. The first hour gastric emptying correlated inversely with vitamin D levels (sl= -0.34)95% confidence interval -0.64, -0.03; p =0.033). The correlation was weaker with the 4 hour gastric emptying ( sl= -0.28, 95% confidence interval -0.61, to 0.04; p=0.086). Conclusions: Vitamin D levels correlate with efficiency of gastric emptying in patients with GP from IEN, and correction of vitamin D deficiency in these patients will improve their gastrointestinal motility and symptoms related to it.
