Abstract

An equation was derived to compute the response time of any potentiometric electrode consisting of an inert membrane, an internal solution and a potentiometric sensor. This equation was tested with the CO 2 electrode. The influence of the membrane thickness was studied in particular, and the diffusion coefficient of CO 2 through DuPont de Nemours “Teflon” FEP membranes was determined. Permeabilities of CO 2 and water through these membranes were also measured by other methods. The influence of various factors on the response time of the CO 2 electrode has been discussed.
