Abstract

The specific activity of the enzyme arginase (EC 3.5.3.1) from leaves of K-deficient finger-millet plants was less than that of K-sufficient plants. Also, addition of KCl to assay mixture from K-deficient leaves increased the specific activity. When K-deficient leaves of finger-millet were pre-treated with KCl for 9 h and arginase was extracted, there was a 2-fold increase in the specific activity. Concurrently, proline content also increased. When in vivo activity of arginase was measured under stress conditions, there was an increase in specific activity only in finger-millet. Also, the specific activity of the enzyme and the proline content were both high in K-deficient groundnut plants. It is suggested that potassium has a specific role in the conversion of arginne into proline by enhancing arginase activity in finger millet.
