Abstract

Sepsis is a clinical syndrome associated with life-threatening multiple organ dysfunction induced by an excessive host defense response to infectious agents (Hotchkiss et al., 2016). Sepsis is also a leading cause of critical illness and mortality worldwide (Lonsdale et al., 2020, Hotchkiss et al., 2016). The global incidence of sepsis in 2017 alone was estimated at 48.9 million cases with 11 million resulting in mortality (Rudd et al., 2020).
