Abstract

To give an overview on the current development in PET imaging as an additional tool in brain tumor management. The rising emphasis on molecular tumor characteristics both in primary and in metastatic brain disease leads to an increased demand for noninvasive 'molecular' grading as well as treatment planning and surveillance of therapy effects. Metabolic imaging using amino acid PET provides further insights into tumor metabolism; current novelties comprise the use of hybrid PET/MRI scanners as well as development of new tracers. Furthermore, treatment monitoring and prognostication on the basis of amino acid PET is gaining further importance in neuro-oncological decision-making. Due to its unique properties in visualization of tumor biology, amino acid PET will continue to gain further importance in primary and secondary brain tumors.
