Abstract
Dreyfus and Spinosa aim to show that the doctrine they dub 'robust realism' is coherent. They group at least two distinct doctrines under this rubric, one of which is coherent, the other not. The coherent doctrine is that it makes sense to think of science as, among other things, probing the underlying structure of various substances and classes of things. Since underlying structure is not something we meet with in our everyday activities, it is coherent to think of the discovery of underlying structure as an enterprise that 'makes sense of things' on a level distinct from that on which we encounter them in our everyday coping. The incoherent doctrine is to suppose that categorization in accord with underlying structure is mind-independent.
