Abstract
This article focuses on the work of yatiris prisoners, ritual specialists who officiate Andean ritual offerings on behalf of inmates who require their services. These offerings, given to the principal supernatural beings of the Andean pantheon the day before sentencing, serve to obtain the prisoner release or at least a significant reduction of his sentence. Therefore, yatiri is asked not only to act as a specialist in the cure of diseases, but he is considered a sort of «lawyer», advocating for his clients inmates, through the special relationship he could set with the Pachamama and Achachilas, the spirits of the mountains. In an unusual scenario for the study of certain ritual practices, we will see how the yatiris help inmates to find the «meaning» of prison experience through their own traditional tools, making the prisoner still part of a community that, once free, could return to accept him.

Antes de tratar las temáticas específicas de este trabajo 1 es necesaria una breve premisa sobre el peculiar funcionamiento de la cárcel de San Pedro, a pesar de que sea imposible en estas páginas dar cuenta de todas las anomalías que conciernen a la aplicación de la ley, la gestión del espacio y la organización de los reclusos. Un circuito de corrupción y de «favores» involucra la relación con las figuras claves del juicio, mientras la capacidad resolutiva del abogado está completamente subordinada a la capacidad económica de su asistido, que en muchas ocasiones, como he dicho, empeña todos los fondos propios y aquellos de la familia para pagarle, quedándose al cabo de poco tiempo sin recursos para seguir adelante con la defensa de su caso o, peor, para costearse su permanencia en la cárcel de San Pedro. Pero dentro de la cárcel, donde los problemas «judiciales» reflejan las preocupaciones más urgentes de sus clientes, es importante que los yatiris mantengan con el propio asistido una actitud «neutral»:. Alimentan así el sentimiento de pertenencia del grupo, que nace y se fortalece a través de la creación de «redes de significado», un entramado de sentidos que confiere pautas para interpretar determinados acontecimientos que se producen en la cárcel, percibiendo a su manera también el espacio de convivencia y las personas que lo habitan
