Abstract

Background and aims: Rishyagandha (Withania coagulans) is a well-known herbal remedy popularly sold as paneer ka phool in India. Rishyagandha fruit extract has purported anti-hyperglycemic effects. Its related species Withania somnifera popularly known as Ashwagandha is a well-known hepatotoxic herb. We present two retrospective cases of possible herb-induced autoimmune-like liver injury which occurred in an elderly couple who were taking rishyagandha seed extract for their diabetes.
