Abstract

The electromagnetic modes of ion lasers are often markedly different from the modes observed in other types of lasers. The previous experimental observations are reviewed, and the significance of the corresponding gain and refraction profiles is investigated. The high gains and high electron densities commonly occurring in ion lasers cause the field distributions to depart significantly from the usual spherical mirror Fabry-Perot fields.
