Abstract

We encountered a patient with steroid-dependent asthma who had been stable while receiving 8 mg of methylprednisolone daily with a baseline FEV a of 65% of predicted value. He had a positive response to purified protein derivative (PPD), and administration of rifampln was started. Within a month, he required two emergency department visits for treatment of asthma. Despite substantial increases in the dose of methylprednisolone, his asthma continued to worsen. His FEV~ decreased to 40% of predicted value. Switching from methylprednisolone to prednisone also failed to improve his condition. However. the subsequent discontinuation of rifampin restored good control of his asthma. His FEV 1 returned to baseline.
