Abstract

ABSTRACT During a taxonomic revision of the neotropical species of Rhynchospora sect. Pauciflorae, a new species was found in the savannas of the southern portions of the Guiana Shield in Venezuela, and Brazil, and is described here. Rhynchospora psammophila occurs on periodically flooded white-sand savannas, and differs from the other species of R. sect. Pauciflorae mainly due to the thick roots, long spikelets, and long nutlets. Descriptions, taxonomic comments, illustrations, preliminary conservation status assessments, habitat, and a distribution map are provided.
