Interrelationships among the lais of de and the anonymous Old French narrative lais have elicited controversy over a number of fundamental literary-historical and methodological issues. Was de France-whose iden tity remains an open question' -the exclusive author of the lais in London, British Library, MS Harley 978 ?2 Which lais belong to each corpus?3 A long-standing working notion conventionally attributes the twelve lais in Harley 978 to Marie de France and some twenty others to an unknown author or authors.4 This distinction has in recent decades been progressively reinforced by numerous
