Abstract
Abstract This report describes in broad outline the development of RPC detectors from the beginning up to the RPC 2001 Workshop. Two specific RPC problems connected with the long-term electrical polarization of electrode materials and freon-based gas mixtures are noted. Typical parameters of modern RPCs used in streamer-spark and avalanche modes are given. Brief information about all large RPC detectors for physics is presented.
