Abstract
The curvature of loaded structures is an important parameter in the field of strength of materials. The traditional curvature measurement methods have their limitations in flammable, explosive and electromagnetic environments. In contrast to traditional electrical sensors, the advantages of optical fiber sensors make them popular in different applications. This paper reviews the developments of optical fiber sensors for curvature measurement during the past years. The characters of optical fiber sensors are analyzed and the research status of different types of optical fiber sensors for curvature measurement is introduced and discussed in details. Comparison analysis regarding typical advantages and limitations of different types of optical fiber sensors for curvature measurement is also presented and discussed. At the same time, the sensor itself is very small when the optical fiber is employed and remote measurements are possible through detecting the reflected/transmitted light and analyzing them in remote locations. It is believed that the high integration and intelligent are expected to be the future tread of optical fiber sensors.
