EU's new policy strategies for growth and innovation include a strong commitment to promote social innovation - in contrast to the earlier focus on technological innovation - potentially decreasing the identified gender gap in innovation. The article scrutinises this potential of 'undoing gender' in Europe 2020 and Innovation Union by means of the new scientific concept 'gendered social innovation' and the discourse analytical approach 'What's the problem represented to be?'. The results expose that the broad approach to innovation identified on a general level in the strategies, seems to open up public innovation support to wider societal participation and benefit with a more equal inclusion of women and men in innovation, by including a broad range of sectors, industries, organisations, disciplines and innovation types. On a more specific level, possible reinforcement of existing gender patterns is identified, however, due to excluding elements in parallel strategies of smart specialisation, critical mass and excellence.

In this article, we offer a framework for conceptualizing the contribution of discourse analytic approaches to the study of the verbal communication of children with autism, with an emphasis on conversation analysis. We argue that insights from these approaches serve to complexify traditional deficit interpretations of prototypical features of autistic language, such as pronoun atypicality, pragmatic difficulties, and echolalia. Our framework is presented in three parts, each comprising a theoretical premise about language made by discourse analytic approaches and the premise’s methodological corollary. To illustrate, we analyze extracts from three children with autism, pointing to competencies and interactional processes and that are largely invisible in mainstream research. Finally, we describe how these insights offer fruitful suggestions for clinical intervention.

This contribution lays out the basics of hegemony analysis, a form of discourse analysis that builds on Ernesto Laclau’s theory of discourse and hegemony. I propose to conceive of hegemony as a function of discourse. Hence, hegemony analysis primarily wants to understand the workings of this function, and not—as many other discourse analytical approaches—the concrete substantial developments within a given discourse. I first introduce the main tools of hegemony analysis: a specific notion of discourse, a typology of discursive linkages, the concept of hegemony, the nexus of subjectivation and discourse coalition building and finally an ideal type of hegemonic strategy. I then proceed to demonstrate how these tools are used in an exemplary analysis of the German discourse on social market economy in the 1940s and 1950s.

Through the analysis of the positions taken in the discussion on Academic Writing, the article shows that the experience of Academic Writing adopted from Anglo-Saxon educational practices in many Russian universities is based on the traditional EAP (English for Academic Purposes) methods which have been systematically criticized for text-centricity and cultural universalism. The critical revision of the traditional EAP methods requires implementing a discourse analytical approach and cultural relativism in Academic Writing course. A review of critical studies on Academic Writing concludes that the criticism of the traditional EAP methods is developed on the basis of concepts worked in the Russian rhetoric tradition by researchers of the Bakhtin circle. The article points out that in the Russian educational context the EAP experience is to be implemented through a discourse analytical approach that has been adopted in the EAP practices in response to criticism. The concepts developed in the Russian rhetorical tradition are required to apply a discourse analytical approach in the Academic Writing course in Russian universities.

This quasi-experimental study compared three discourse analysis-based approaches Writing Discourse Analysis Approach (WDAA), Speaking Skills Non-Integrated Discourse Analysis Approach (SSNIDAA), and Speaking-Writing Integrated Discourse Analysis Approach (SWIDAA)—on Libyan secondary EFL students' speaking performance. Sixty final-year students at Al-Kadisia Secondary School participated in a 12-week intervention delivered by the researcher. Speaking was assessed pre- and post-intervention using a validated analytic rubric. One-way ANOVA revealed significant group differences, F(2, 57) = 3.66, p < .05, η² = .11. Tukey HSD tests showed SWIDAA (M = 11.90) outperformed both WDAA (M = 8.80) and SSNIDAA (M = 8.95), while WDAA and SSNIDAA did not differ significantly. Findings suggest integrated speaking-writing instruction enhances EFL speaking performance more effectively than isolated approaches in this context.

This scoping review studies how translation works through discourse and register analysis approach. In translation, different translation types have been successfully practiced. In interlingual translation, translating means beyond the word-for-word translation. In literature translation, the translation process demands improvement, especially in classical literature that needs to be understood in a target foreign culture. This systematic review aims to study how translation processes work and how discourse and register analysis approaches can improve translation products. Discourse analysis deals with how language communicates and holds its social and power relations. Discourse analysis aims to understand and investigate sentences and discourse through their underlying social and cultural context. Through the metafunctions of language, register variables such as the field, tenor, and mode, as well as through comparative analysis of the source text and the target text, translation products could be more efficient for the target audience. Hence, it can ensure translation quality. The conclusions of this systematic review could lead to future studies to improve translation quality through discourse and register analysis approach.

Two approaches dominate current thinking in health and welfare: evidence-based practice and reflective practice. Whilst there is debate about the merits of evidence-based practice, reflective practice is generally accepted with critical debate as an important educational tool. Where critique does exist it tends to adopt a Foucauldian approach, focusing on the surveillance and self-regulatory aspects of reflective practice. This article acknowledges the critical purchase on the concept of reflective practice offered by Foucauldian approaches but argues that microsociological and discourse analytic approaches can further illuminate the subject and thus serve as a complement to them. The claims of proponents of reflective practice are explored, in opposition to the technical-rational approach of evidence-based practice. Reflective practice tends to adopt a naive or romantic realist position and fails to acknowledge the ways in which reflective accounts construct the world of practice. Microsociological approaches can help us to understand reflective accounts as examples of case-talk, constructed in a narrative form in the same way as case records and presentations.

Islam is a religion that is adopted by the majority of Indonesian people and is believed to be a guide to life in order to obtain salvation in the world and in life after death. It makes a significant contribution to the initial process of negotiations to formulate the nation's philosophy of life, namely Pancasila. As a life guideline, the Pancasila nation and state are the main reference to conceptualize the sovereignty meaning which is then derived into International Law owned by Indonesia. This article uses the approach of discourse analysis in the implementation of Islamic values in the ideology of Pancasila. Islam's most important contribution to Pancasila is the 'monotheism' element which is the essence of Islamic teachings. Therefore, the dichotomy of Islam and Pancasila, or Islam and Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia (NKRI) becomes no longer relevant.

Discourse analysis (DA) embodies two main approaches: Foucauldian DA and radical social constructionist DA. Both are underpinned by social constructionism to a lesser or greater extent. Social constructionism has contested areas in relation to power, embodiment, and materialism, although Foucauldian DA does focus on the issue of power. Embodiment and materialism may be especially relevant for researchers of nursing where the physical body is prominent. However, the contested nature of social constructionism allows a fusion of theoretical and methodological approaches tailored to a specific research interest. In this paper, Chris Stevenson suggests a frame- work for working out and declaring the DA approach to be taken in relation to a research area, as well as to aid anticipating methodological critique. Method, validity, reliability and scholarship are discussed from within a discourse analytic frame of reference.

The purpose of this research is to conduct a comprehensive linguoculturological analysis of verbal and non-verbal means of expressing “polycode” irony in modern Russian political discursive practices. In the process of problem-solving research uses different methods and approaches of discourse analysis: a functional analysis of corpora of political texts of the Russian language; pragmatic analysis of speech acts and communicative; stylistic analysis revealing the specifics of genre specific political practices; the linguistic and cultural interpretation; the descriptive-logical methods of categorical mapping units and their subsequent economicaly. The article deals with the main functions and roles of “polycode” irony in political media space. In the study, the authors identify the key functions, high significance and abundance of “polycode” irony in media-political discourse. The article contains a linguistic analysis that has contributed to identifying main rhetorical devices most commonly used to create “polycode” irony.
