Abstract

This paper deals with the speed control of Direct Current (DC) motor in forward as well as reverse direction. The chopper circuit uses Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) as power switches. Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique is used for controlling the power switches. IC LM3524 is used as a regulating pulse width modulator. Soft start circuit is also provided to limit the inrush currents. The proposed system is fabricated and implemented in the laboratory to run the DC motor in both the directions. It has potential applications in traction drives, steelworks, hot strip mills, transformer winding machines and Chart recorders. This laboratory model developed can be used by undergraduate students for studying MOSFET based chopper.
