Reverse Sabbaticals 2.0: A framework and research agenda for bi-directional industry–academia collaboration (IAC) centered on curriculum co-creation

This paper presents Reverse Sabbaticals 2.0, a curriculum-centered framework designed to address persistent gaps between academic instruction and evolving industry requirements. Although universities and industries collaborate through internships, guest lectures, sponsored research, and technology transfer, these interactions rarely influence the design of core curricula. Reverse Sabbaticals 2.0 proposes structured two-way exchanges between faculty and industry professionals to enable curriculum co creation and applied learning. The model organizes participation across three tiers of engagement; Engage, Embed, and Elevate and two participation tracks involving faculty externships in industry and practitioner participation in academic roles. The framework is informed by a systematic review of 28 peer-reviewed studies supported by bibliometric mapping and expert consultation. Building on principles of experiential learning and collaborative curriculum design, the paper also outlines a research agenda across six domains to guide future empirical testing and institutional implementation of structured academia–industry collaboration.

The purpose of this paper is to understand the technological innovation taken place in pharmaceutical industry based on institutional research and the gaps between the investment made in research the utilisation of research by the industry. Though the topic is open for argument but it will be beneficial for public policy makers concerned with science and technology and economist thriving for technological change and innovation. The paper aims at putting a discussion for a need on investment and private businesses collaboration with institutional research. This gives space and time for new knowledge to transform the existing technology for betterment of life. It critically talks in the context of pharmaceutical companies in India while getting an outline from industrially developed countries. It highlights the fact that first industry academia collaboration enhancement agenda was held on 5th March 2013, in New Delhi. This itself explains the requirement of institutional research for technological upliftment which will further be supported by literature presented by the researchers.
 The international scenario showed that 1980’s Bayh Dole Act of United States is the best model to strengthen the industry and research collaboration. The model has been implemented worldwide. This paper presents the analysis of countries like U.S.A, United Kingdom, China and OCED countries. The reason for this is that these countries have well developed academia industry collaboration and strategic partnership between them. Though these countries have better GDP and stable economy. However, India is a growing economy and new ideas will help it in making it stronger.
 India is at a starting stage of developing the process academia research and industry collaboration, so there is a way for new strategies to make way in the bottleneck for collaboration. Even in India Bayh Dole Act has been implemented under different name. But one of the major challenges regarding its implementation that India receives is in transparency and clarity in terms of policy and lack of inputs from different organisations. In addition, different are positive about India’s growth and in order to sustain such growth in coming years it is imperative to have technological advancement and innovation to accelerate to propel the economic growth of the country. Thus, research centres near firms seems to get more related to research work concerned or required by the industry. In other words, in industry research collaboration geographical proximity has main of the main role to play in it. The study bases its argument on rich literature that advocates that the collaboration is beneficial for both research and industry.

Factors affecting the industry–academia collaboration: a case study of higher education institutions (HEIs) in Islamabad, Pakistan

Purpose The industry–academia collaboration (IAC) at the higher education level is greatly impacted by various factors. This study aims to investigate the factors influencing IAC in higher education institutions (HEIs) in Islamabad, focusing on educational interactions (EDU), academic entrepreneurship (ENT) and research-related interactions (RRI). Design/methodology/approach This study adopted a quantitative approach by forming research questions using a critical study of literature and collected data from 80 faculty members selected through stratified sampling across public and private HEIs through the survey method. Statistical analyses, including reliability tests, descriptive tests, correlation, ANOVA, multiple regression and multicollinearity, reveal that while all three factors significantly contribute to IAC, ENT emerges as the strongest predictor (β = 0.586, p < 0.01), followed by RRI (β = 0.194, p < 0.01) and EDU (β = 0.152, p < 0.05). Findings The findings indicate moderate engagement in educational initiatives such as guest lectures and field visits, but limited efforts in RRI and ENT activities. These factors explain 76.2% of the variability in collaboration outcomes. Key barriers include the lack of structured policies, insufficient funding and misaligned academic outputs with industry needs. This study highlights the need for a robust entrepreneurial system, targeted policies and strengthened collaboration frameworks to enhance IAC. Research limitations/implications This study is limited to the perspectives of faculty members from a small sample of HEIs in Islamabad, which may not fully capture the industry’s viewpoint, ignoring the viewpoint of industrial experts because of limited resources. Additionally, it does not address external factors such as government policies or global market dynamics. Practical implications This research contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable innovation and provides actionable strategies for bridging the academia–industry gap. Originality/value This pilot study provides valuable insights for researchers interested in a larger IAC. It also provides insights for HEI managers who want to understand the motivations of industry participants in RRI. These insights are not only relevant for Pakistan but also for other developing nations seeking to leverage IAC for sustainable innovation. This research contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable innovation and provides actionable strategies for bridging the academia–industry gap.

Revealing the intellectual foundations of healthcare supply chain risk: a bibliometric mapping and research agenda

Purpose Supply chain risks and disruptions pose a significant threat to the healthcare industry. This paper aims to synthesize the research streams in the intersection of healthcare supply chain management and risk management to identify the research gaps and future research directions. Design/methodology/approach We collected 205 papers published between 2006 and 2023 for the bibliometric analysis for the keyword co-occurrence and co-citation analysis, generating backward- and forward-looking perspectives on the scholarship in healthcare supply chain risk management (HSCRM). Findings This study finds a growing scholarly interest in HSCRM. Using bibliometric tools and mapping, this study presents the overall research trends in HSCRM literature and identifies seven research, namely, clusters, cost analysis, allocation, performance management, patient safety, quality, risk assessment and logistics and four research themes, namely, resilience, risk management strategy, healthcare supply chain disruption and data analytics, through the keyword co-occurrence and co-citation analyses. A future research agenda is provided based on these clusters for further investigation in this field. Originality/value This study conducted bibliometric analysis to identify clusters and associated themes for insights for further research. This approach helps advance the scholarship and proactively apply the implications in practice beyond the reactive strategy to risk management in healthcare supply chain management.

Towards Effective Academia-Industry Collaborations: The Case of Higher Learning Institutions in Tanzania

Industries are the main consumers of products from higher learning institutions (HLIs); graduates for employment and research outputs for socio-economic development. Research outputs from HLIs are commercialized as services or products facilitated by academia- industry collaborations. The collaborations are expected to address mismatch between labour market needs and HLIs’ products, which has resulted in graduates’ employability challenges. Despite their importance, effective academia-industry collaborations remain challenging. This study explores the effectiveness of Academia- Industry collaborations established by HLIs in implementing the Higher Education Economic Transformation (HEET) project (2021- 2026) in Tanzania. One of the project objectives is to build functional linkages between industry and HLIs to align graduates with needs of labour market. The study explored the quantity and types of collaborations established, enablers and barriers, strategies to align graduates with market needs, and sustainability. Using a mixed- method approach, data was collected from eighteen out of nineteen participating institutions through an open-ended questionnaire. By June 2024, HLIs had established 2 to 23 collaborations, with joint research being the most common type of collaboration. Key enablers were institutional support and mutual benefit. Funding constraints and bureaucratic delays were the common barriers. Strategies for aligning HLIs outputs with market needs included enhancing practical skills for both staff and students, curriculum reviews, and institutionalizing the collaboration. Engagement, formal agreements and regular reviews were the strategies for collaboration sustainability. The study results serve as useful feedback to the HLIs, industries, and inputs to policymakers in facilitating effective academia-industry collaborations.

A Strategic Roadmap for Navigating Academic-Industry Collaborations in Information Systems Research

Research collaboration between industry and academia remains challenging despite progress being made on a number of fronts. We are not implying that all information systems researchers should be engaging in industry collaborations, nor should the value of critique and work exclusively addressing academic and other audiences be viewed as less valuable than those engaging industry. The intent is instead to encourage more industry collaboration, and for those considering such initiatives to roadmap the activities strategically giving consideration to the full range of activities required so reasonable tradeoffs can be made in the context of building longer-term sustainable relationships. We develop a roadmap from literature that organizes the building blocks (component activities) needed to plan and implement strategic academic-industry collaborations over longer time horizons. Specifically, we identify the key themes or layers of (1) Strategic Business Problem(s), (2) Governance, (3) Funding Criteria, (4) Privacy, Security and Ethics, (5) Intellectual Property, (6) Research Design and (7) Recognized Outputs, which need to be in place if you are to succeed with academic-industry research. The roadmap framework highlights the need to consider the implications of the components across each of the layers at a particular point in time (vertical slice), the relationship between layers (dependencies) and the need for aligning the various activities in a coordinated manner; otherwise success at one layer is often undermined by a lack of awareness or failure at another layer. Our hope is that these themes (layers) facilitate organizing this collaboration in a systematic and coordinated manner to produce academic-industry collaborations that progressively improve over time.

Knowledge Management in Academic Industry Collaborations: How to Best Foster Innovation Capability?

Purpose Academic industry collaborations (AIC) are increasingly seen as a key part of national innovation policies as an approach to creating and exploiting knowledge. They, however, present a complex challenge in terms of knowledge management (KM). This is partly due to the wide range of stakeholders, the input of government policy, and also the different cultures, practices and expectations of those involved. The research questions are as follows: RQ1: How do participants perceive and experience knowledge creation and transfer in academic industry collaborations? RQ2: How can the intersection between knowledge management literature and AIC inform and improve both disciplines and practices? Methods (1) An analysis of KM literature in terms of AIC. (2) Exploratory in-depth interviews with participant stakeholders of AIC projects. (3) Findings are then analysed in terms of existing concepts in KM literature. Findings Initial findings suggest that a more in-depth acknowledgement of the role of power, tensions and differences between stakeholders is important in understanding and improving the innovation potential of AIC projects. A more nuanced understanding of knowledge transfer is also needed with tailored approaches for particular project stages and organisations. Practical Implications The role of academic industry collaborations in fostering innovation by facilitating knowledge creation and transfer is seen as increasingly important as a social and political priority but KM has so far not yet engaged fully with this. This paper suggests that extending KM from a primarily organisation level focus to a broader societal focus would be a useful development.

Fabricators, industry and academia: the technology transfer challenge

Automated fabrication is a cornerstone of the revolution in manufacturing technology. The ever-increasing number of machines and the widening variety of applications both state that the technology is here to stay. But, there are still many lessons to be learnt before we are faced with a mature, stable and fully integrated technology. Industry uses automated fabricators to gain a market advantage. Eventually they will be used in order to avoid being left behind. The role of academia is to guide industry through these developmental stages and to ensure the transition to maturity is smooth. It is important to analyse the roles of industry and academia in supporting this new technology. There are a number of strategies for gaining industrial acceptance and the experience of the University of Hong Kong and other institutions in Hong Kong, in liaison with local industry, may help future technology transfer programmes.

Three-Layer Structure among Technology Transfer, Industry-Academia Collaboration, and Basic Research in Universities

In promoting the creation of innovation, it is imperative that new technological seeds developed by universities are transferred to private companies; in recent years, such awareness has been on the rise. To promote technology transfer, it is important to comprehend its relationship with its influencing factors. We assumed a three-layer structure, meaning that basic research promotes industry-academia collaboration, which in turn promotes technology transfer. This study aims to reveal the quantitative relationship between technology transfer and university activities and indexes, and examine the three-layer structure. Taking Japanese universities as a case study, data on technology transfer including patents and venture companies, industry-academia collaboration including joint research and contract research, and basic research including research papers and grants-in-aid for scientific research were collected and analyzed. Consequently, multiple regression equations, which explain patent applications, patents, patent licenses, income of patent licenses, and venture companies using five, five, two, three, and two explanatory variables, respectively, were derived. Moreover, the three-layer structure was examined considering the multiple regression models and the correlation between the explanatory variables and other influencing factors. We hope the results will help in planning policy measures and also help university managements in promoting technology transfer.

Teaching sociological subjects in English to university students: a case study of the Polish university

Nowadays, the role of English in teaching sociology has been increasing significantly, as far as the English language is an international medium of academic communication worldwide. Polish universities also follow this global trend. Students are offered not only general English courses but also specialised facultative courses in English. Taking into account the last one, a reflexive qualitative research has been carried out at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, the Maria Grzegorzewska University in Warsaw. The objective of four face-to-face expert interviews with the academic teachers was exploring teaching methods and techniques, as well as difficulties in the process of teaching sociology with the use of English as a foreign language. An expert interview was designed starting from the teaching background, followed by teaching reflections on their didactic practice and ending with the academic teachers’ thoughts on the role of English in sociology. The following issues were considered: 1) methods and techniques of incorporating English in teaching sociology to Polish students; 2) strategies of motivating students to use English in sociology; 3) the perception of difficulties; 4) reflections on empowering students.The research results in the field of the sociological facultative English-based courses revealed the dominance of some ways of using the language over others. All experts acknowledged that they aimed to develop sociological English through the communicative and task-based approaches. They engaged students in reading sociological texts and critically discussed them. Some of the academic teachers referred also to watching and listening to native speakers as important ways to activate students during their classes. Moreover, the experts took into account students specific interests and encouraged them to prepare a presentation or to write a short essay. Some experts used also the collaborative methods when students were involved in group projects and group presentations. In general, the experts developed interesting and important topics of social life and research to strengthen the students’ intrinsic motivation. It was noticed that the presence of foreign students becomes a reasonable factor of improving English-based communication among Polish and foreign students in classroom. The experts pointed out that there were various linguistic, psychological and institutional barriers in teaching sociological subjects in English for Polish university students. Nevertheless, they tried to overcome those obstacles whenever it was possible.

Barriers to the Success of Strategic University - Industry Collaborative Research Projects

Aerospace companies and universities conduct strategic collaborative research projects, one of th e aims of which is to transfer technology between the parties involved. However, barriers such as the difficulty of transferring tacit knowledge, the cultural differences between universities and companies, interpersonal difficulties and labour turnover ca n impede the success of such collaborative projects. Case studies, focus group sessions and questionnaires have been employed to investigate these barriers in university - industry collaborations in the aerospace sector and to identify solutions for overco ming some of these barriers. Principal barriers identified by aerospace industry and university questionnaire respondents were delays in the fulfilment of objectives, the differing time horizons of university and industry, bureaucracy, financial difficulti es and the short -term focus of industry. The paper incorporates information from the literature and the research into a practical model that can be used as a guide by project managers in universities and aerospace companies participating in collaborations to help overcome these barriers. The model operates at an inter -organisational level and adopts an organisational learning approach to technology transfer in which technology transfer is viewed as a process rather than an event. The model focuses both on m anaging individual university - industry collaborative projects and managing university - industry collaborations over time. The model is now being validated via a case study and preliminary findings from this work are presented.

Proceedings of the 2014 international workshop on Long-term industrial collaboration on software engineering

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the WISE/TESTBEDS joint workshop. A long-term cooperation between academia and industry is every important factor in obtaining success in industrial-relevant research, research validation in a full-scale industrial context, innovation and technology transfer. There are many examples of a long-term good cooperation that have led to many great research and innovation results. At the same time maintaining a continuous cooperation is very challenging due to organizational changes, or changes in business goral of a company, or inadequate motivations factor from academia site to keep long-term close relations.By long-term we mean a period of at least six months several years or several decades of years. The goal of the WISE workshop is to bring researchers and practitioners together to exchange experiences of cooperation between academia and industry, with emphasis on experiences and new ideas in achieving and maintaining a long-term cooperation. This year WISE includes a session of papers from the International Workshop on TESTing Techniques & Experimentation Benchmarks for Event-Driven Software (TESTBEDS). TESTBEDS aims to increase the cross-fertilization of automated testing methods for the emerging popular event driven systems, which include Graphical User Interfaces, Web and Mobile applications, Network protocols among others. An event driven system is typically implemented as a collection of event handlers that respond to inputs (internal/external events) or other applications. This non-sequential nature of interaction creates a challenge for testing because the outcome of an event handler may depend on the state and on the sequence of preceding events and the potential event sequence space is enormous. TESTBEDS goal is to promote a discussion of how to diminish the effort in testing these systems, either by using automatic methods, or by using abstractions and promoting reusability, for instance, using test applications that work on different platforms or that reuse the same test strategy after a minor configuration process. Another aim of TESTBEDS is to encourage the development and sharing of benchmark applications and tools for evaluating new testing techniques. We also encourage attendees to attend the keynote talk presentations. Academia–industry collaboration, intellectual property rights enforcement, and scientific performance: evidence from Chinese Academy of Sciences

Public research institutes (PRIs) are an important part of the academic research world and also tasked with collaborating with industry to contribute to knowledge economics. This raises conflicts between disseminating public knowledge and appropriating through secrecy or intellectual property. However, there is little empirical evidence on the effect of PRIs’ academia–industry collaboration on scientific performance. Our research fills this gap by providing an empirical analysis at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Based on a newly compiled dataset about CAS, this study explores the effect of academia–industry collaboration on scientific performance and the moderating role of intellectual property rights (IPR) enforcement. The empirical results reveal that there is an inverse U-shaped relationship between academia–industry collaboration and scientific performance and IPR enforcement steepens this curvilinear relationship. These findings suggest that policymakers should be mindful of possible adverse consequences for scientific performance and strengthen the IPR enforcement, when encouraging academia–industry collaboration.
