Abstract
To the Editor.— The possibility of reusing coils with 27% saline was reported by Bilinsky and Morris ( 218 :1806-1808, 1971). We had previously had a fair degree of success reusing coils that were refrigerated between use and storage only with normal saline. Although problems were infrequent, significant episodes of sepsis caused us to abandon this procedure. Over a two-month period, we reused coils in four patients. Dialysance of urea and creatinine was stable with up to eight reuses, and we had no problem eliminating the hypertonic saline from the coil. However, one patient developed Klebsiella sepsis and the coil effluent collected prior to that dialysis subsequently yielded Klebsiella organisms; a second patient developed Staphylococcus sepsis but the coil effluent collected prior to dialysis was sterile.
