Abstract

Stories have a remarkable way of illustrating theories. This article will use Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to illustrate the tension between Mary Parker Follett’s power with systems and the Marquis de Sade’s power over systems. Through resurrecting the Tamara-land metaphor, we have used intertextuality and literary critique to explore the power dynamics of Dorothy, the Strawman, the Tin Woodman, and the Lion vis a vis the more powerful characters in Oz: The Wizard of Oz, and the Witches of the North, East, and West. This work is of interest to academics and practitioners who wish to explore complex power dynamics in a simple and elegant fashion.
