Adhikari entitled ‘Effect of calcium and magnesium hardness on acute copper toxicity to Indian major carp, Labeo rohita (Hamilton) and catfish, Channa punctatus (Bloch)’ published in Aquaculture Research, volume 34, number 12, October 2003, on pages 975–980, contains text that is nearly identical to text in two articles written by Perschbacher and Wurts entitled ‘Effects of calcium and magnesium hardness on acute copper toxicity to juvenile channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus’, Aquaculture172, 275–280 (1999) and ‘Effects of bicarbonate alkalinity and calcium on the acute toxicity of copper to juvenile channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus)’, Aquaculture125, 73–79 (1994). While we believe that the data in the Aquaculture Research article are original and correct, most of the Abstract, Introduction, and Discussion has been misappropriated from the other published sources. Therefore, Aquaculture Research issues a retraction of this article, and expresses apologies to Drs Pershcbacher and Wurts, and to the journal Aquaculture.
