Abstract

Within the framework of the Gaussian wavefunctional approach, weinvestigate the quantum and finite-temperature influences on theZ2-symmetry (ϕ→-ϕ) of the (1+1)-dimensional massivesine-Gordon field theory. It is explicitly demonstrated that by quantumeffects the Z2-symmetry can be broken in one region of the parameterspace and restored in another region. Moreover, a finite-temperatureeffect can only restore the Z2-symmetry further.
