Abstract
Abstract This paper describes the background for a responsible application of oil-based mud in NAM operations, with a clear policy for environmental protection as a first priority. The implications of current and anticipated Dutch legislation are discussed, together with a review of relevant equipment and procedures that can meet all demands. Finally, developments in NAM in the use of alternative muds and improved cuttings cleaning technology are described.
