Abstract

Design of an artificial respirator involves careful selection of a number of controlling parameters and correct timing of oxygen supply. The paper reviews the significance of the various controlling parameters, such as peak alveolar pressure, dead space, input waveform and ins-piratory and expiratory times, etc., their selection and computation method. Requirements as regards the timing of oxygen supply in conformity with patient's changing condition are brought out and a scheme for fulfilling them is discussed broadly.
