Abstract

We previously reported findings of high numbers of respirable rubber tire fragments in urban air samples. The mode for particle size was 6.6 µm, which included 90% of the particles observed. These particles were also shown to contain epitopes derived from natural latex. This report extends these earlier observations by demonstrating immunologic binding (via inhibition assays) and IgE-bridging activity (via passively sensitized rat basophil leukemia transfected with human alpha chain of the FcErI{RBL-48}) of latexderived proteins isolated from particles <10 µm (PM-10) filtered urban air.
