Abstract

The authors have investigated the electron collision processes in HF in the region 4-14 eV, focusing on H-formation and on resonant excitation of the first vibrational levels of the neutral molecule, in order to compare the experimental results with recent ab initio calculations on HF- states by Segal et al (1981). The differential cross section for the H- production shows two broad peaks, with maxima around 9.5 and 12.5 eV. A Pi symmetry is clearly assigned to the HF- state responsible for the first peak, whereas no clear-cut conclusion could be extracted from the experiments for the 12.5 eV process. The authors have not found any evidence of the 22 Sigma + HF- state calculated by Segal and co-workers either in H- dissociative attachment channel or in the excitation of the first vibrational levels of HF. On the other hand, the two broad peaks in the H- cross section are observed in the very energy region where the 22 Pi and 42 Sigma + are computed by these authors.
