Abstract

Objective To study the clinical value of fibrin glue on attaching conjunctival autografts after pterygium excision. Methods Prospective, randomized comparison method was adopted. Forty patients with primary pterygium were randomly divided into the fibrin glue group (20 eyes ) and the 10-0 nylon suture group (20 eyes ) A superior conjunctival autograft was harvested and transferred onto bare sclera after pterygium excision. Fibrin glue was used to attach the autograft in 20 eyes and nylon 10-0 su- ture was used to attach the autograft in 20 eyes. The patients were followed up for 6 months. Results All conjunctival autografts in both groups were successfully attached and were intact without falling off, dissolution or recurrence after 6 months. The mean surgical duration was(20. 5 ± 3.6) minutes for the fibrin glue group and (42.8 ±4.5 ) minutes for the suture group. The mean surgical duration was significantly shorter in the fibrin glue group( P 〈 0.01 ). Subjective symptoms of pain, foreign body sensation, tearing, and photophobia were milder and disappeared more rapidly in the fibrin glue group. ( P 〈 0.0 i ). Conclusion Fibrin glue is a safe and effective method for attaching conjunctival autografts after pterygium eXCISIOn. Key words: pterygium ; fibrin glue ; conjunctival autografts
