Abstract

This paper applies a method of motor direct drive high voltage circuit breaker (HVCB), through establishing the simulation model calculation and the circuit breaker prototype test, the control capability during the opening and closing operations is investigated. In this operating mechanism, the travel of the moving contact of HVCB is controlled by the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). A simulation model of the motor control system is built and the control algorithm of the PMSM is introduced. Based on the control theory and simulations, an experimental system with a 126kV HVCB and a 30kW PMSM is established to test the motor drive operating mechanism. The simulation results and Motor drive prototype test results show that the operating characteristics of the motor drive mechanism are stable, reliable and can fulfill the requirements of HVCB operations. This operating mechanism can also enable the intelligent operations of HVCB to meet future requirements of modern electric power grid.
