Abstract

The presence of absence of keratin in avian eggshell membranes has been a controversial issue. By immunohistochemical analysis with anti-keratin monoclonal antibodies AE1 and AE3, it was demonstrated that chicken eggshell membranes do not contain the keratin epitopes that are detected in chicken and human skin under identical conditions. Thus, the presence of keratin in eggshell membranes seems to be unlikely.
