Abstract
The striking socio-economic contrasts pervading all aspects of Brazilian society offer a good example on how the attempts in promoting prevention programmes or treatment of drug dependence are doomed to failure, should they have not been previously based in local research aimed at first recognizing the peculiarities of the target populations.
