Abstract

Michel René Barnes shows how Augustine's trinitarian theology is best understood as a progressive appropriation of ‘Nicene’ trinitarian theology, developed in polemical engagement with those who deny that Nicene faith. Barnes believes that Nicene trinitarian theology fundamentally equals the understanding that the three (persons) act together, and so are one in nature. Augustine's trinitarian theology has been misunderstood because — and to the degree that — it has been read within a presumed Neoplatonic context.
