The recent report by Epstein and colleagues (1) on the apparent ineffectiveness of parenteral chrysotherapy is highly significant. Since the first reports of the use of gold therapy in rheumatoid arthritis, 64 years ago, its efficacy has been hotly debated and its toxicity has been amply documented.
